Sing, Play, Act! Becoming a Musical Improviser by Sarah Storer

  • The Hashtag Comedy Co. Columbus, Ohio (map)

About

The best musical improvisers aren't always the best singers, nor do they always craft the cleverest lyrics or the best rhymes. Instead, they have the right balance of heart, conviction and simplicity and have a real love for great characters and stories. In this three hour improvised musical workshop, participants will learn:

  • How heart, conviction and simplicity are THE core tenants to musical improv

  • How music acts as the emotional heartbeat of solid scene work

  • How to bring YOUR unique voice (whether you're a virtuoso or not!) to the table to create something beautiful in real time

This course is fast-paced and highly interactive. Whether you're new to musical improv or a veteran, you'll leave with the confidence to "make your own kind of music". Participants should have at least Level Two improv training, and experience with extended scenes or longform is also helpful. Basic knowledge of music is also a bonus, but not required. Come ready to dive right in and sing!

Instructor

Sarah J Storer brings over twenty years of improv experience to the classroom. She originally studied with Cinublue Productions and received further instruction from the legendary Chris Lane and MCTD's Jeff Gage. As the former Artistic Director and founding member of The Hashtag Comedy Company in Columbus, OH, Sarah created TBD: the Improvised Musical in 2015 and Ladies Who Lounge: an Improvised Musical Lounge Act in 2019. She earned a diploma in piano performance in high school, and is a singer and songwriter with three original one-woman shows that debuted in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Sarah's goal in teaching is to help students discover "lightbulb moments" and gain confidence on stage through understanding and embracing their unique voice.
